Our work around Safeguarding and the Charity, Community and Faith Sector

Working with Global Majority communities, to strengthen Safeguarding in the community

Community Action Sutton (CAS) has been supporting the Adult Safeguarding Board to engage local communities on safeguarding issues, including raising awareness of what safeguarding means and how concerns can be reported. A key aspect of this work has been chairing the Community Engagement Subgroup, which plays a vital role in ensuring that the voices and experiences of local communities are reflected in the Board's work and priorities.

The subgroup has contributed to a range of initiatives, including promoting the Making Safeguarding Personal approach, supporting the development of safeguarding information on the website, and providing community feedback to inform safeguarding policies, resources, and communications.

We are currently working with Global Majority communities to better understand their views and experiences of safeguarding. The insights gathered will help shape the development of an accessible safeguarding awareness video designed specifically for local communities. We will also be exploring the issue of cuckooing, examining its impact on local residents and raising awareness of the warning signs to look out for. 

Safeguarding Responsibilities for Charity, Community and Faith Groups

If your organisation works with vulnerable adults or children, it is important to ensure that you have appropriate safeguarding measures in place, including:

• An up-to-date Safeguarding Policy.
• Clear safeguarding procedures and reporting processes.
• Regular safeguarding training for staff, volunteers, and trustees.
• Appropriate Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) checks where required.
• A designated Safeguarding Lead to oversee safeguarding responsibilities within the organisation.

Strong safeguarding practices help protect vulnerable individuals and ensure organisations provide safe and supportive environments for those they work with.

Reporting Safeguarding Concerns

To report a concern please contact Sutton Council's Adult Safeguarding Concern Form  on 020 8770 6770 (or  020 8770 5000 outside of 9-5, Mon-Fri) or complete a safeguarding referral form. If your concern is about someone under the age of 18, you can report a concern about a child.
