The voluntary sector can be confusing at times, especially when it comes to terminology and jargon. Even if you’ve been in the sector for years, you are bound to come across new terms or acronyms that you have never heard before.

Safeguarding Referrals
To report a concern please contact Sutton Council's Adult Safeguarding Concern Form on 020 8770 6770 (or 020 8770 5000 outside of 9-5, Mon-Fri) or complete a safeguarding referral form. If your concern is about someone under the age of 18, you can report a concern about a child.

Safeguarding Training
The London Borough of Sutton provide safeguarding training and e-learning free for organisations working with vulnerable children, young people, adults, and their families in Sutton, and those with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND).

Transform is a partnership led by Cranstoun which brings together local organisations, each with unique skills and experience in domestic abuse.

- Male-only One Stop Shop: Masonic Hall 9 Grove Road, Sutton SM1 1BT
- Open: Every third Thursday of the month, 10am - 1pm, no appointment necessary

A hate crime is any crime or incident where the victim, or any other person, believes it was carried out because of the victim’s identity.
If you are a victim of or witness a hate crime
- call police on the non-emergency 101 phone number, in an emergency dial 999 or report it online on the Met police website.
- call Stop Hate UK which provides independent, confidential and accessible reporting and support for victims, witnesses and third parties on a 24-hour free 3rd party reporting number 0800 138 1625.
- alternatively, you can call Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111, the number allows the public to give information to the police with guaranteed anonymity about crime and criminal activity.
Useful Websites
Community Action Sutton is a member of NAVCA (National Association for Voluntary and Community Action). NAVCA supports local infrastructure organisations, across a range of areas of work, including policy, health, volunteering, equalities and more.
NCVO (The National Council for Voluntary Organisations) is an organisation set up to support small charities. They provide practical support including online guidance, training and events – the NCVO is a membership organisation.
If your charity or voluntary organisation has an annual turnover of less than £30,000, you can become an NCVO member for free.
The Charity Commission are the regulators of charities in England and Wales. They are responsible for maintaining an accurate and up-to-date register of charities, you can use their website to search for registered charities, set up a registered charity and send in your annual returns.
The Charity Excellence Framework website provides a free one-stop-shop for charity funding, policies, help & resources.
The UK Civil Society Almanac 2024 shows the latest available data on the voluntary sector's finances and people.
The Almanac is a particularly useful resource for anyone involved in planning or strategy work, helping identify opportunities and challenges likely to impact your organisation in the future.
