Sharing Meals, Strengthening Community

Sohbet Society brings Sutton residents together through food, friendship and culture.

Sohbet Society Impact Photo 1Over the past few months, we’ve had the pleasure of supporting and working with the Sohbet Society. The Sohbet Society provides structured religious learning, spiritual mentoring, and community programmes for Muslims across Britain — fostering understanding, resilience, and social cohesion.

Between February and May 2026, Sohbet Society brought local families and residents together through four free, family-friendly community gatherings. Read more about the events below.

The events began with a Community Breakfast at Shiraz Mirza Community Hall on 15 February, followed by a Community Iftar(dinner) at Hill House Community Centre on 27 February. We then came together for an Eid al-Fitr celebration at Shiraz Mirza on 20 March, before closing the series with an Eid al-Adha gathering on 27 May.

Each event offered hot food, drinks, children’s activities, music and, most importantly, time for people to sit together, talk and feel welcome. For many residents, the gatherings helped ease the pressure of the cost of living while also creating a warm space to meet others and feel less isolated.

Our volunteers played a central role, serving meals, welcoming families and helping create the relaxed, friendly atmosphere that people valued so much. Feedback from guests highlighted the “community feeling,” the “friendly environment,” the food, the conversations and the activities for children.

One guest told us, I felt I was not alone in this country. Another said they lovedmeeting people.” Across the events, the words that came through most strongly were togetherness, friendship and belonging.

We are very grateful to Sutton Community Action for making these gatherings possible. We also thank everyone who attended, volunteered and helped create such a positive atmosphere.

Sohbet Society would love to hear from anyone who wants to volunteer, support future events or simply stay connected as we continue building welcoming spaces for people across Sutton.
