Funding Secured to Honour Windrush Heritage Through Fashion

Place At My Table was founded at the beginning of the pandemic in early 2020, at a time when communities across the country were facing uncertainty, isolation and growing inequality.

Recently we supported this vital small charity to help them secure funding through the Windrush Day Grant Scheme 2026. The funding enabled them to deliver a programme of activities across the borough, culminating in a celebratory fashion show on Windrush Day, 22 June 2026.

This culturally significant intergenerational programme celebrates the fashion aesthetics shaped by Caribbean migrants who arrived in Britain between the 1950s and 1970s. For the Windrush Generation, clothing was never simply about appearance. It functioned as a cultural technology of survival, dignity, resistance, visibility and belonging. Through carefully chosen garments, Caribbean migrants asserted pride, self-worth and agency while navigating the racism, exclusion and structural inequalities of post-war Britain.

The programme brought together elders, younger generations and the wider community through storytelling, workshops, archival exploration, intergenerational dialogue and creative presentation.

Joseph Jeffers, CEO Place At My Table said;

"We first became aware of the funding opportunity through the Community Action Sutton Bulletin, which played an important role in connecting us to the grant scheme. Following this, we received valuable guidance from Community Action Sutton’s Head of Partnerships, who took the time to discuss our initial idea, explore its potential impact and help us think carefully about how to shape a strong application.

This support helped us develop clearer outcomes aligned with the funder’s priorities, particularly around celebrating Windrush heritage, strengthening intergenerational connection, increasing community participation and recognising the cultural contribution of Caribbean elders in Sutton.

The funding will enable Place At My Table to create a range of meaningful opportunities for local residents, partners and communities to come together, learn from one another and celebrate the legacy of the Windrush Generation. We are grateful to Community Action Sutton for helping us identify the opportunity, refine our thinking and build an application that reflected both the needs of our community and the wider aims of the Windrush Day Grant Scheme".
