Celebrating Eid at Shanklin

Bringing residents together to celebrate Eid!

When our team started working around the Shanklin estate they met with the Shanklin Village Resident’s Association. Members of the residents association had told us that they wanted to engage with the local community and encourage them to make better use of the community hall, to help build  strong sense of community and generate income from the hall.

During initial conversations with the residents association and the local community we discovered along with limited engagement around 45% were from B.A.M.E communities.  We supported the residents to work in partnership, they were keen to do something to bring communities together. The residents were keen to hold a community-led event in the village hall.

On 11th May 2023, 27 residents including children attended a vibrant Eid celebration in the village hall. Residents enjoyed traditional food, music, and activities including henna and face painting.  Staff from local charities and community groups including the Leader of Sutton Council and NHS staff attended the event.

Following the success of the this event, we wanted to keep up the momentum and community spirit, so we supported the residents association to create a WhatsApp group for residents to feel engaged and included in local news and activities. Two B.A.M.E. residents also joined the residents’ association and have been actively engaging and setting up activities for the community.
