The League of Friends of the St Helier NHS Trust (The League of Friends) is a charity based in St Helier hospital in Carshalton. It is wholly run by volunteers and has been working to support patients, their families, visitors and staff for many decades.
Funds are generated through a small retail shop and a Café, both of which have core hours of 10am-2pm Monday to Friday. This Shop and Café are not only for last minute necessities but provide somewhere to relax and regenerate in a bright happy atmosphere. Everyone is aware that the NHS struggles financially, and their continued efforts mean that some important items, and those little extras that make life easier, continue to be provided.
They are always looking for more volunteers to join their teams and help with their fundraising. Their Annual General Meeting, which will be announced publicly in the Sutton and Croydon Guardian during June, is an open meeting and anyone that is interested is welcome to attend. It is an opportunity to hear what they do, what they have achieved during the previous year, make suggestions for improvement, and importantly to help them find new volunteers.
The items that have been provided by The League of Friends in the last few months include:
- Equipment for the CCU to enable monitoring of multiple patients,
- New seating in the clinics reflecting current ability needs, along with televisions to make the waiting time more pleasurable,
- Furniture for the Respiratory ward family room,
- Treats on special days, for example International Nurses Day.
